Mathematics teaching in today’s school is textbook dominated, concerned with endless repetition and meaningless memorization. The children are asked to memorize tables, formulae for area of a rectangle, triangle, circle, value of pi, Pythagoras Theorem, identities and the list is endless. This makes the learner conclude that mathematics is nothing but rote memorization of body of rules and formulae, to be learnt at the dictate of the teacher. |
Children really need a mathematic programme that is very alive, vibrant and meaningful. Children must be made to explore, discover, and understand mathematics that is prevalent everywhere around them. This can be achieved only by setting up a Math Lab in every school.
